You know, it’s pretty funny, back in 2011 I attended Eve Fanfest and one of their biggest points of discussion was the amplification of brutal game mechanics in order to present an in-game currency sink.
A sink is an object placed in games to keep players spending money to curb in-game inflation, for example, armor repair costs. No matter how much you hoard your gold, if you want to fight…you have to repair.
Almost a decade old with a seniority based game mechanic, Eve Online is by default plagued by an old guard of infinitely wealthy hoarders of in-game currency. After about an hour it was decided that explosions are good for the economy.
Nevermind the fact this perpetuates an unsurmountable risk that keeps players spinning ships and talking shit on Eve Radio chat more than actually PLAYING the game…but I digress.
The Soovada (Huttese for Spoils of War) gambling event on Nar Shaddaa is testing how much people value this rancor mount, how long they’re willing to try for it and acting as a credit sink all at the same time.
What a perfect way to analyze player behavior and more accurately ascertain the value of a big ticket item. It’s like running a monte carlo simulation…with real people!
See, the problem right now in SWTOR is that the cartel market is not accurately pricing cartel packs. People are buying them, reselling them without even opening them…and most people would rather buy the big ticket items directly on the GTN (SWTOR’s Auction Hall) than try their luck at a cartel pack. Meaning the PLAYERS are better at pricing the big ticket items than the game is at balancing the expected value of cartel packs…
Instead of surveying players, “how much would you pay for this mount and how long would you be willing to try to get it?”…they opened a casino, essentially killing all the birds with one slot machine.
If successful you can expect more casino games in the future, more prizes and a more complicated payout system…reserving extra rare items for only the most obsessive players. A re-vamp of the pricing structure/drop rate of rare items in cartel packs (or the removal of them entirely), and a change in the way big ticket items are released in game.
Right now they’re just gauging how far people are willing to go to get that bloody Kingpin Rancor Mount…!
So what about Eve Online?
Well…I guess it never occurred to them that with all that money they spent on Captain’s Quarters…they could have just opened a bloody casino in Jita…
*cheers*
